Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
